Can you still breastfeed if you have COVID-19?

Yes. The World Health Organization has stated that breastfeeding individuals who are infected with COVID-19 would still be recommended to breastfeed, but they should follow these precautions:

  1. Practice respiratory hygiene and wear a mask while breastfeeding
  2. Wash hands before and after touching the baby
  3. Routinely clean and disinfect surfaces
  4. If expressing breastmilk with a manual or electric breast pump, make sure to:Wash your hands before touching the pump or any bottle parts
  5. Follow recommendations for the proper cleaning/sterilisation of the pump after each use.
